In today’s demanding environment, this shop proves how automation has never had so much potential to transform a business.
Today, customers do less annual forecasting. They reduce inventory in favor of just-in-time (JIT) delivery. They do not combine shipments and they want all of their parts in small batches. This makes the need for quick turnaround urgent, with continued pressure to keep pricing low. In this environment, automation has never had so much potential to transform a business: it puts shops in the driver’s seat to lower their costs, increase throughput and improve quality as market conditions continue to change. Martin and Brian Halwix of New Dimensions discuss how the company transitioned into automated production with Makino flexible manufacturing systems. Using three MMC2 pallet handling systems with six horizontal machining centers tied to each, the company has been able to keep part costs low regardless of batch size, and doubled its production volume per employee for improved profitability.
In 2014 we installed our third Makino MMC2 flexible machining system consisting of:
- Automated pallet handling system with 114 pallet stocker locations
- 5 material loading stations
- 6 A51nx horizontal CNCs each with:
- 218 tools
- High pressure through spindle coolant systems
- In-spindle probes
- Coolant chillers
- High capacity conveyors
This system was featured on the cover and in the pages of Makino’s newly published MMC2 brochure.
